Onco Anaesthesiology is a unique subspecialty that focusses on the study and perioperative care of cancer patients. Our division specially cater to the unmet needs of cancer patients.

THE IMPORTANCE OF OUR SPECIALTY

Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally, and the World Health Organisation (WHO) predicts 22 million annual new cancer diagnosed globally by 2030. The increasing incidence of cancer worldwide increases the demands for oncology treatment.

The oncology treatment is a multidisciplinary and often the treatment requires the combination of surgery and oncological diagnostic and therapeutic interventions that necessitates anaesthesia.

OUR ROLE

Onco Anaesthesiologists are the experts in evidence-based, patient-centered and outcome-driven perioperative management of cancer patients.

We are actively involved in the evaluation and assessment of patients’ schedule for cancer surgeries, perioperative anaesthetic management of various cancers, perioperative analgesia for cancer surgeries, and issues related to inoperable cancers.

OUR GOALS

  1. To facilitate early return to intended oncological treatment (RIOT)
  2. To optimize co-existing disease and prehabilitation prior to treatment
  3. To deliver patient-centred intra-operative care
  4. To imbibe multimodal interdisciplinary analgesia
  5. To integrate supportive care including palliative medicine
  6. To minimise the complication in the postoperative period & the length of hospital stay
  7. To improve oncological outcomes & quality of life

  4. Staging surgery
