DR SHAIRIL RAHAYU BINTI RUSLAN

Shairil’s affiliation with the University of Malaya began in the year 2000 in which she enrolled in the Foundations Programme (ASASI UM), followed by the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme at the Faculty of Medicine (of which she thankfully graduated from), which was then followed by a 5-year stint at Hospital Kuala Lumpur. It was here that she found herself immersed in the world of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care after witnessing not one, not two, but three competent anaesthetists perform various resuscitation and airway management skills that impressed her completely. She was also attracted to the overall jovial nature of the clinicians within that department and felt that she could blend in well enough, and so she enrolled in the Masters of Anaesthesiology programme in the year 2012. Despite finding herself a tad overwhelmed with real-life-family-related responsibilities and a spouse who was also undergoing a Master programme at the time, she exited the programme on time and joined the Anaesthesia fraternity in the year 2016.

Shairil returned to the Department of Anaesthesiology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya in 2017 after a year off with hopes that she could refine herself as an efficient anaesthetist, esteemed researcher as well as a prolific educationist. Along the way she would find herself becoming interested in the fields of intensive care and airway management specifically, although she also found herself keenly interested in education. At present she is one of the undergraduate programme coordinators for the Department of Anaesthesiology and spends a substantial amount of time at regular intervals chasing fellow colleagues for exam questions and vetting sessions (aside from the usual academic obligations).

As far as extracurricular activities go, she is one of the editors for the official Malaysian Society of Anaesthesiologists official newsletter called Berita Anaestesiologi, in which she also writes and does a lot of proofreading when she is done hunting for articles. During her spare time, she enjoys gardening, cat-rearing, cooking, miniature art creations, collecting unique dolls and LEGOs, as well as writing her thoughts down in private journals.
