Preoperative IV Iron to Treat Anaemia Before Abdominal Surgery (PREVENTT TRIAL)
PRESENTER : DR TAN CHEN LONG
SUPERVISOR : DR KEVIN
Objective
– To determine if a single dose of intravenous iron (ferric carboxymaltose; 1000 mg) given to patients
with anaemia prior to major open elective abdominal surgery would
- correct anaemia
- reduce the need for peri-operative blood transfusions
- improve patient outcomes
Learning points
– Determine the benefits of intravenous iron in patients undergo major abdominal surgery in term of preoperative Hb optimization, postoperative complications, length of hospitalization and quality of life.
– Re-emphasize on the multi-pillar framework of patient blood management: –
1) comprehensive preoperative anaemia management
2) minimization of iatrogenic (unnecessary) blood loss
3) harnessing and optimizing patient-specific physiological tolerance to anaemia
