  • ECMO serves as a bridging therapy and not a curative therapy.
  • VV-ECMO – For severe Respi Failure
  • VA-ECMO – For severe cardiac failure with or without respi.failure
  • VV-ECMO has 4 types based on cannulation site
  • Gas exchange can be operator-manipulated by mainly 3 parameters:
    • FiO2 
    • Blood Flow
    • Sweap Gas flow

Discussion

  • ECMO aids not only in O2 delivery but CO2 removal based on Fick Law of diffusion.
  • ECMO allows cardiac recovery by offloading the work of the ventricle, Increases perfusion to vital organs by increasing blood flow and oxygenation.
